    Our Recommendations

Actually, there's lots of good research methods books out there, so it's often good just to check out a few in the library or bookshop and see which style suits you best.

However, these are books and Katerina and I use or have used when doing research and recommend to others:

    Most Comprehensive

Barker C, Pistrang N, Elliot R (2002) Research Methods in Clinical Psychology: An Introduction for Students and Practitioners (2nd ed). Chichester: John Wiley and Sons.

Favourite Guide to the Practicalities of Carrying Out a Research Project

Boyton, P.M. (2005) The Research Companion: A Practical Guid for the Social and Health Sciences. Hove: Psychology Press.

    Favourite Introduction to Statistics

Greene J, D'Oliveira M (1999) Learning to Use Statistical Tests in Psychology. Buckingham: Open University Press.

    Favourite Reference for Statistics

Clark-Carter, D. (2004) Quantitative Psychological Research Textbook: A Student's Handbook. Hove: Psychology Press.

    Favourite SPSS Book

Pallant J (2004) SPSS Survival Manual: Version 12. London: Open University Press.

    Favourite Internet Sites

  • AllPsych's Online Research Methods Web Textbook.
  • Wikipedia page on psychological research methods.
  • About.com guide to research methods in psychology.
  • Interactive guide to experimental design and data.

    Neuroscience and Neuroimaging of Psychotherapy

Two good review articles have been published recently which have summarised research on the use of neuroimaging to evaluate the outcomes of psychotherapy - particularly with a view to understanding how brain function is altered after treatment.

  • Linden DE. (2006) How psychotherapy changes the brain - the contribution of functional neuroimaging. Molecular Psychiatry, 11 (6), 528-38. pdf

  • Roffman JL, Marci CD, Glick DM, Dougherty DD, Rauch SL. (2005) Neuroimaging and the functional neuroanatomy of psychotherapy. Psychological Medicine, 35(10), 1385-98. pdf

    Philosophy of Mind Books

Not part of the core topic, but some people expressed an interest in further reading on the Philosophy of Mind.

An excellent, accessible, general introduction to philosophy in Simon Blackburn's Think (ISBN 0192854259). If you'd like a brief guide to Western philosophy I can't think of a better place to start.

For something a little more in-depth and specifically focusing on Philosophy of Mind, I'd recommend:

  • Mind and Cognition (2nd ed) (ISBN 0631205454) - Edited by William G. Lycan.
  • Philosophy of Mind: A Guide and Anthology (ISBN 0199253838) by John Heil.

John Searle's book The Mystery of Consciousness (ISBN 1862071225) is an excellent read that will introduce you to many key issues as well but just be aware it is very much Searle's take on the issues.

Finally Wikipedia has some excellent pages on philosophy of mind that are well worth checking out.
